Jenny Bevacqua’s Story

jenny-bevacquaI am a pediatric nurse practitioner.  Every single day, I see children with serious conditions whose parents can not take time off work because they do not have access to paid leave.  As a health provider, my job is to prioritize the health of the child but I know that it’s also critical to the child and the family that the parents keep their jobs.  There have been a few times when I suggested a parent quit their job (and get on medicaid) because their child needed lots of help.  But is this what we want as a community?  For people to have to lose their jobs and go on public assistance in order to take care of their family members?  We need paid family and medical leave so that people will be able to take time from work when they need to attend to a medical crisis in their family  –without risking their economic security.
